The four major tournaments of the professional tennis year are known as the Grand Slams. They are the most important tournaments for world ranking points, prizemoney and public recognition. They are the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and they are played in that sequence. They produce tennis of the highest calibre and are always fiercely contested.

The Australian Open is played on a hard court during the hot Australian summer. January temperatures regularly hit 30°C so the fitness of the players is particularly important. In 2010 the men’s single title was won by Roger Federer who beat Andy Murray in straight sets. The previous year 2009 Rafael Nadal had defeated Federer in five sets. The women’s singles title was maintained by Serena Williams who beat Justin Henin. The previous year she beat Darina Safina.

The French Open is played on the clay court of Roland Garros. The surface is slow playing and long rallies are common making it physically demanding. In 2010 Rafael Nadal beat Swede Roger Soderling in three sets. The previous year Roger Fesderer beat Soderling so he was runner-up two years in a row. The women’s singles title was won by Italian outsider 17th seed Francesca Shiavoine who beat Samantha Stosur in straight sets. The previous year Svetlana Kuznetsova beat number one seed Darina Safina.

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and has been held at the All England Club since 1877.Many regard it as the most prestigious with its traditions of strawberries and cream, strict dress code and royal patronage. It is played on grass which was the original surface for lawn tennis. In 2010 the men’s single title was won by Rafael Nadal who beat Tomas Berdych in straight sets. The previous year Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick in an epic five sets. The women’s singles title was won by Serena Williams over Vera Zvonareva. The previous year Serena beat her sister Venus in straight sets.

The US Open dates back to the 1880s but since 1978 is has been played on acrylic hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York. In 2010 the men’s single title was won by Rafael Nadal who beat Novak Djokovic in four sets. The previous year Juan Martin del Potro defeated Roger Federer in five sets. Federer won for five consecutive years before that. The women’s singles title was won by Kim Clijsters who beat Vera Zvonareva . The previous year Clijsters beat Caroline Wozniacki to win.
